For interest. If anyone's submitting to Orion Children's Books, be aware it seems to be taking them nine months to reply. I sent off a query letter containing a short synopsis (that was all) at the beginning of September last year. (I'd forgotten!) The rejection arrived this morning.

Hell, that was a long time, BM. You could write another one in that time!

I just checked my Excel spreadsheet, and the longist it took for a response/rejection so far, is The Yasmin Standon Literary Agency @ 21 weeks 4 days.
The new children's blockbuster, Keeper of the Enchanted Pool, available soon from all major online retailers.

Thanks PF. Yeah. It'd make you weep.

I know of another agency - very small one that specialises in children's literature - which had over 1,000 submissions last August (or it may have been September) alone. And they turned them all down.

Loved your cartoon on the other thread by the way. Reminded me of myself the other day when I started composing a response to a review I had received. (You know the kind of review: 102 words which must have taken a max of a minute.) Thankfully, I didn't send it.

(Might yet mind you.)

Best not. I did once, and got stamped on from a great height! It's nice to write it out, sit on it a while, and then get rid. It gets it out of your system (a little) though.

Think of it as toughening up to what the Guardian etc type crits will do to you when you are published.

You're dead right PF. When I was bit of a so-called 'newbie' I did send out a reply which I regretted.

I too got stamped on from a great height. (Quite rightly.) Was told I had the manners of a pig, which was fair, but a bit harsh on pigs I rather felt, since they are rather nice, intelligent creatures. (And the heart of a good breakfast to boot.)

One lives and learns. That's the interesting thing about YWO. Apart from the feedback about one's own scribbles - and it is, often, really great for that - one also learns (worryingly on occasion) more about oneself.

In the meantime, in the immortal words which strike fear into us all, good luck with your writing!

"You have manners that would shame a pig" is what I said. This construction does not denigrate pigs but still gets the point across.

DOH!!! Those skeletons won't stay quiet in the closet BM. Werrr... Dooomed, Mr Mainwaring!
(Author's note: Yes, I know it was rubbish dialogue from Dad's Army.)

I've just come up for air. Ever made changes on the wrong master copy after changing the THE (new) master copy for YWO then forgetting to change the new bits you thought you'd change while you were on site, to save going through it all again! Do I hear you say. 'What the f... is she on about?'

I don't know what I'm doing, so I doubt if you will know what I'm doing either. ........................Toodle Pip. Back to the drawing room.

Your point was well taken at the time Cobble.

But not much point in going back there I submit.

(I'm still learning about these emotythingies.)

I understand.

Relax.

Best advice I can offer: open a nice bottle of NZ 'Soveenyoong Blong'. Take the weight off your slingbacks. (Or whatever.)

All best.

There is a general problem in the publishing industry that everyone has way too much to do that you seem to spend your whole life apologizing to people for being slow getting back to them. Why does it have to be that way? The economics of the business simply don't seem able to support enough staff to do the job as well as anyone would like.

Sadly, I've often found myself rejecting people nine months down the line. Maybe you've just been really slow getting to that part of the slush pile, or maybe, against your better judgement, you've wanted to give a project a chance so you've thought about it for a bit and, instead of rejecting it, sent it out to a couple of readers to see what they think, but they've been so busy it's taken forever, and so on. In the end I always figured it's better to reject many months down the line than not to reply at all.

As a rule, if a project came in that excited you, you were on top of it very quickly, dealing with the author within a week or two and coming back with a firm offer within a very few weeks. So my general comment on this sort of thing is if you've not heard within two months max you should presume it's a dead proposal going nowhere and any positives you receive back after that time should be seen as total bonuses.
