I'm wondering. With 5000 books being published, what will happen to YWO? As I still have not figured out about a quality control of what is being published, budding authors won't even have to go through the review process which had been benefitial to many.

And is there a slowing down in reviews already?

Hi E,
This is a shrewd move by ywo. Coffers are filled and customers are happy.

This promotion will generate much needed income, which can only be a good thing for the running and development of our great and free site.

It will also allow many budding authors to see their work in book form, which admittedly some works may well be considered `not good enough` but that's not the point.

For many here, being able to give `their` book as gifts to family and friends will be a fantastic feeling. Regarding the unsolicited nature of some of those books - who cares. As long as the customer's happy with that then that's fine.

As for reviews slowing down, yep, inevitable I ‘spose. Everyone’s beavering at their MS’s.

Opinion is ultimately determined by the feelings, and not by the intellect.— Herbert Spencer (1820–1903)

I'm afraid you misunderstood. My post was not about the publishing spree itself, rather a question whether it will impact the reviewing behaviour of some (or more likely many).

5000 books are published without further need of the reviewing process. That's a lot and it could lead to a slow down in the reviewing process. Or it will drag millions to this site...

Hi Eilidh, I understand where you're coming from. I know some of the major publishers watch this site, because a publisher contacted me after seeing my work on YWO. I'm now most of the way through the rewrite following the editor's suggestions. But I wonder if publishers will now be as interested in YWO when they know they are going to publish 5000 books of their own.

Please don't anyone shout at me, I've got a stinking headache. It's just something that has crossed my mind. Ted's offer is fantastic, I just wondered what the publishers connected with YWO think of this? Is it Will they now lose interest in the site? I hope not.

There already seems to be a slowing down of reviews, but I guess everyone is frantically putting their books together. To those who are taking up the offer, I hope you sell loads and loads.

YWO is absorbing the risk and investment in new authors. If someone is successful and a book looks like it is doing well - i'll bet the big publishing houses will come calling.

It is a money business, books already partially successful make a better investment than ones with no track record at all. They'll be watching the outcome with interest...

I think everything will be fine. We have two clear and separate strands - story development and print on demand. If a book is highlighted as being excellent, either through the feedback and chart process or through publishing sales then this is what publishers will be interested in. The two may combine on site for some, like with Bufflehead Sisters. The combination of good feedback and sales was what achieved the book's publishing success with Penguin.
