So, this makes twice in a row someone held my story for 4 days and then dumped it. I know I'm not the only suffering from the critique blues.

Hi Jen,

I've had the same, 3 times now, in a row. I think some reviewers see that its children's fiction and don't want to read it! But I'm sure other genres fare badly too.

Me, I've dumped twice, once 'cause the subject matter was too close to the bone, and the other, because I'd just done a review of this person's other story and I wanted something fresher.

So to the dumpers: Give us a chance, you were kids once too!

Look on the bright side. If you'd been dumped twice in a row a few months ago, it would've been two weeks instead of 8 days.

oh, poo. you just had to go mess up my pity party didn't you.

Because of you, I have Monty Python stuck in my head...

Some things in life are bad,
They can really make you mad,
Other things just make you swear and curse,
When you're chewing life's gristle,
Don't grumble,
Give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best.
And...

Always look on the bright side of life.
[whistle]
Always look on the light side of life.
[whistle]

If life seems jolly rotten,
There's something you've forgotten,
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps,
Don't be silly chumps.
Just purse your lips and whistle.
That's the thing.
And...

Someone has held my story for four days too and then it's a lost cause. Back into the melting pot. YOU OUT THERE WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS, get your act together. If you don't want to review the damn stories, don't hang on to them. REMOVE, you have the technology!!! Let someone else have them. You are doing yourself and the rest of us no favours. An angry Pam.

Forgive the language in advance, but an arsehole is an arsehole - nothing you can do, change, lgeislate for, can change that. People who hang on and don't bother are arseholes. End of story. So don't give them the satisfaction of begging. Just let Ted deal with it - as he says, those who let assignments time out will get their come uppance in that they will have to endure the same misery when they are waiting for their own stuff to be reviewed. Rise above it. We are all in the same boat. Stop moaning and get writing

Yes; or possibly they are ill, or a family member is; or there's been a sudden rush at work, or something unexpected came up that made them unable to do the review.

That can also happen - same applies though - the best cure for waiting is writing and not moaning

Well I hesitate to agree with Lexi (sets a bad precedent) but the problem is that reluctant reviewers aren't allowed to dump STRAIGHT AWAY.

If you ask for three assignments and one of them is, say, a children's story about an apprentice wizard, you should be able to dump it immediately. Otherwise if can't get back to it, it sticks for 4 days.

And no, if you dump it I don't think you should be able to replace it with another one for 24 hours, but if you know you don't want to even read the first page why not be allowed to dump?

Well BT was responsible for one timing out. I had one for one night. I went get on the internet the next day to put the review on and they had cut me off after one day in our new home in error. It wasn't until a week later that they put me back on, after hours of phone calls to India/Pakistan? Not a lot I could do, as where I lived there were no internet cafes; only cows, birds of prey sheep etc. No car and husband away for the week in his truck. So there are occaisions when it's not the fault of the reader. I badly needed to get two done for both books, as having been off the internet for almost a month they were due to fall out of the chart.

So there are occasions when it isn't humanly possible to do a review.
The new children's blockbuster, Keeper of the Enchanted Pool, available soon from all major online retailers.

Isn't the answer to just take one assignment at a time, and not request another one until you've done the one you've got? Even with the reduction to 4 days, there are, I suspect, quite a few people who 'cherry pick' - take 3 assignments, choose which one to do and let the others time out. If everyone just took one at a time, at the time they knew they could do the review, then 99% of the problems would disappear.

Just read all this thread with some dismay until the last poster and - there is the answer.
Change the rules, put the techno in place and only allow one assignment download at a time. This would encourage reviewing instead of chucking.
If you do not want to review just chuck it and wait.
I have reviewed quite a few things that I did not like the look of and some of them grew on me and in any case doing quite a quick review does less damage that just hanging on doing nothing.

Agreed. That's the key.
