We were very pleased to see that Caligula by YouWriteOn member Douglas Jackson had been 'promoted' from the shelves in our close-to-London Waterstones to the hardback New Reads section with a face-on display. Also, in WH Smith here, there is a small display for hardback books, just about all are spine displayed and these are all very well known 'name' authors. Caligula joined them yesterday (so to speak!). Well down to Doug on this further progress

From what I understand, the publishers have to pay for prime position in the retailers, so this is a good indication that the author is being fully backed by the publishing house.

JDSMITH: There's an interesting, yet worrying article about it on the blog by Snowbooks--an independent book publisher who, by the way are open to submissions.

The link to the article is here:-

blog article about marketing costs

The main page for Snowbooks is www.snowbooks.com -- a good place for all authors to check out, at least.

EDIT: Thinking about my earlier post, it may be misconstrued--I'd like to point out it's equally likely the books was chosen for prominent positioning purely because it's a great read!

Perhaps some good questions building up for Doug's chat on the 16th August.

Doug managed to get to chart position 25 in historical hardback fiction on Amazon for sales recently. Currently he's in position 29. Should be really interesting to learn what his experiences of being a new author and book signings have been like over the past few weeks.

I'd added a review for Caligula on Amazon, if anyone else would like to add one please do. Perhaps one day we might see different successful YouWriteOn members adding review texts on actual high street books for each other, so perhaps why not start the network support now for those who wish too
